EPS Helical-Worm Gearbox Series | 80-92% Efficiency Right-Angle Drives — Ever-power

EPS Helical-Worm Gearbox Series

A helical pre-stage combined with a worm gear output stage delivers 80-92% efficiency in a compact right-angle package. 7 frame sizes from EPS 38 to EPS 98, covering output torques from 90 Nm to 4,200 Nm. The engineering solution when a pure worm reducer overheats in continuous duty.

EPS helical-worm combination gearbox

Why Add a Helical Pre-Stage to a Worm Gear?

A pure worm gearbox at ratios above 20:1 operates at 55-75% efficiency. The remaining 25-45% of input power converts to heat, raising the oil sump temperature and limiting continuous-duty runtime. In Australian ambient conditions regularly exceeding 40 degrees C, this thermal limitation is the primary cause of worm gearbox failure in continuous-duty applications.

The EPS helical-worm combination solves this by splitting the total reduction across two stages: a helical gear first stage (97-98% efficient) and a worm gear second stage operating at a lower, more efficient ratio. The result is an overall efficiency of 80-92% — a 15-30% improvement over a pure worm reducer at the same total ratio — with the same compact right-angle output form factor.

All EPS units use case-hardened, ground helical gears in the first stage and 20CrMnTi alloy steel worm shafts with centrifugally cast bronze worm wheels in the second stage. Housing is cast iron with precision-bored bearing seats. Available in foot mount, B5/Z flange, solid shaft, hollow shaft, and shrink disc configurations.

Max torque is the worm stage rated torque. Actual continuous-duty output depends on ratio combination, helical pre-stage selection, and ambient temperature. Refer to individual model pages for complete power rating tables.

What Makes the EPS Series Different

Two-Stage Efficiency Advantage

The helical first stage operates at 97-98% efficiency regardless of ratio. By absorbing 60-70% of the total reduction in this high-efficiency stage, the worm second stage operates at a lower ratio (typically 5:1-15:1) where its efficiency is 85-92%. Combined system efficiency: 80-92%, compared to 55-75% for a single-stage worm at the same total ratio.

Case-Hardened Ground Helical Gears

First-stage helical gears are case-hardened to HRC 58-62 and precision-ground to DIN Class 6 accuracy. This ensures consistent mesh quality, low noise, and extended service life. The helical tooth form provides gradual engagement and smooth load transfer, reducing input-side vibration transmitted to the motor bearings.

20CrMnTi Worm Stage

The worm output stage uses the same 20CrMnTi carburised alloy steel worm shaft and ZCuSn10Pb1 centrifugally cast bronze worm wheel as our dedicated WPA and EPNMRV worm reducer ranges. Inter-stage alignment is factory-set with precision shims.

Extensive Configuration Options

Over 20 configuration variants per frame size: solid shaft (A/B side), double output shaft, B5 flange, Z flange, hollow shaft with/without torque arm, hollow shaft with shrink disc, and combinations. IEC, NEMA, and AD shaft adapters available for direct motor connection.

Self-Locking Capability Retained

Unlike helical-bevel gearboxes, the EPS retains the self-locking characteristic of the worm output stage at higher ratios. This is critical for inclined conveyors, vertical lifts, and gate valve actuators where the load must not back-drive the motor when power is removed.

Compact Right-Angle Output

The right-angle output of the worm stage is retained, providing the same mounting flexibility as a pure worm reducer. This allows direct replacement of existing worm gearboxes with EPS helical-worm units for an efficiency upgrade without modifying the machine frame or drive train layout.
